Job Description:

If you are part of the Environment Agency (EA), you are part of the solution. Working with us means protecting and improving the environment for generations to come, tackling issues of national importance across a wide variety of disciplines.

We are looking for a visionary Director of Strategy & Transformation to drive our strategic direction and be at the heart of building our future as a member of our Executive team.

You will be creative and decisive, with strong values and genuine integrity, confident in leading the development and execution of the Environment Agency’s long-term organisational plans and initiatives whilst also manging strategic risks and our organisational reputation. You will provide outstanding leadership and take responsibility for providing strategic direction and advice to the Chair, the Board and its Committees, Executive Directors Team and other Environment Agency groups.

Your role will be fantastically varied, collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment and drive the successful implementation of strategic initiatives.

You will be a strategic thinker with the ability to translate ideas into tangible outcomes. This will require you to effectively collaborate and influence internally and externally, which are key parts of this role. You will work closely with other public bodies right across the UK and will be able to communicate the Environment Agency’s strategic vision to internal and external stakeholders, fostering alignment and commitment. You will provide outstanding leadership and foster a culture of innovation and adaptability within the organisation.

We are grouped into fourteen areas across England, and our responsibilities span major industry regulation, flood defences, land contamination, water quality, fisheries and conservation. Such a broad scope of work calls for diverse, multi-skilled teams and exceptional leadership: together, we will promote sustainable growth, tackle climate change and secure a better future for everyone.

We are fully committed to being an inclusive employer and ensuring equal opportunities for everyone. We welcome flexible working patterns for all our vacancies, including job share.

To discuss the role in more detail, please contact Nicky Lawton at Nicola.lawton@environment-agency.gov.uk.

Assessments will take place in London in early February. These will include a staff engagement panel. Further details will be provided to shortlisted candidates.

We will be running a virtual briefing session for those interested in applying for the role on 8 January 2024. Invitations can be acquired by emailing: pachiefoperatingofficer@environment-agency.gov.uk.

If you are applying from the Civil Service please note that the Environment Agency is not a part of HM Civil Service and you would not be a Crown Servant in the event of being appointed. Therefore, you will not be eligible for continuous service. For applicants who currently work in local government or other bodies listed in the Redundancy Payments (Continuity of Employment in Local Government etc) (Modification) Order 1999, you may be eligible for continuous service for the purpose of calculating any future redundancy payment. If you are unsure of your status then you should contact your own HR Team.

We are fully committed to having a diverse and inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. We welcome flexible working patterns for all our vacancies, including job share, so please include clearly any information regarding your preferred working arrangements on your application.

We also have a Guaranteed Interview Policy to support those with a disability who are seeking employment. We have committed to guaranteeing an interview to anyone with a disability whose application meets the minimum criteria for the post.
