ICiPS Standards of Professional Practice

ICiPS Standards of Professional Practice were developed in partnership with experienced practitioners and academic experts. These standards provide a shared framework that defines the competencies essential for embedding continuous improvement effectively within any organisation. The key areas of practice are outlined below.

Culture

Activities, norms and values unite organisations to a common purpose and enable continuous improvement communities to flourish. Safe environments allow concerns and ideas to be shared without fear. Belief in the principles of working for ‘public good’ results in partnership working as the norm.

Leadership & management

Leaders and managers champion continuous improvement; creating the conditions necessary for continuous improvement to thrive, empowering employees, unlocking potential, removing blockages and celebrating success.

Innovation

The creation of space provides time for reflection and ideas to be generated. Creative thinking techniques are used to identify new approaches.

Communication

Communication channels ensure the right information is available in the right place at the right time; enabling opportunities for improvement to be identified, lessons learned and success shared.

Organisational intelligence

A variety of information from the operating environment is gathered, assimilated and shared to understand threats to delivery and opportunities for improvement.

Stakeholders

Stakeholders across the supply / delivery chain are actively engaged in identifying and delivering service improvements.

Strategy

Customer need / purpose along with emerging stakeholder requirements are understood and factored into strategic planning. SMART objectives are defined and cascaded. Performance metrics provide visibility of achievement and areas for improvement; without driving inappropriate behaviours.

Project management

Project management principles are applied as appropriate. Continuous improvement, change and transformation align, to deliver a continuous flow of incremental improvements sitting side by side with strategic cross cutting change. Prioritisation criteria are understood.

Change tools & techniques

Appropriate techniques, tools and approaches are used to identify and deliver improvements. Champions provide guidance and expertise on change and transformation initiatives.
